Halaal Game Processing After Hunting

Drop-off only~1 week turnaroundR45/kg

Been hunting and want your game turned into biltong, droëwors and boerewors — done properly, halaal from start to finish? Here's exactly how it works if you bring us your own hunted meat.

Hunter with a kudu taken on a hunting trip, ready to be halaal-processed by Block and Blade

A hunter's kudu — halaal-slaughtered in the field, then processed into biltong, droëwors and boerewors.

Halaal comes first — before it reaches us

For your game to be halaal, it has to be slaughtered according to halaal method at the moment of the kill out in the field — a swift cut to the throat, facing the qiblah, with the name of Allah pronounced over it. Processing meat halaal afterwards can't undo how it was killed. We only accept game from hunters who slaughtered their own animal this way. We do not accept any animal from the pig family in any form, including warthog or bushpig — these are never halaal, regardless of how they were killed or handled.

How it works

  1. You do the hunting, and the halaal slaughter, in the field. That part happens at the time of the kill — it's not something we can do for you afterwards.
  2. Drop your game off at our shop in Secunda. Skin on or already skinned — it doesn't matter to us, bring it either way.
  3. Tell us what you want made. Biltong, droëwors, boerewors, mince, steaks — whatever cuts and products you're after, and any spice preferences (more black pepper in the wors, milder or spicier biltong, whatever suits your taste).
  4. We weigh it and quote you. Processing is R45 per kilogram, not a flat fee per animal, so the cost depends on how much meat you bring in.
  5. Ask for added sheep fat if you want it. Game meat is naturally very lean, which can make boerewors and other processed products dry. Adding sheep fat is optional and by request — if you want it, it's included in the R45/kg.
  6. We process it — cutting, mincing, spicing and drying — over about a week. Turnaround depends on volume and what you've ordered made.
  7. Collect your finished, packed products from the shop. Ready for the freezer or straight to the braai.

What we can make from your game

Common questions

Is game from hunting automatically halaal?

No. It only becomes halaal if it was slaughtered the halaal way at the moment of the kill — a swift throat cut, facing the qiblah, with the name of Allah pronounced. We can only process game that was already halaal-slaughtered in the field; we can't make non-halaal-slaughtered game halaal afterwards.

Do you accept warthog or bushpig?

No — we don't accept any animal from the pig family in any form. Warthog and bushpig are never halaal, regardless of how they were killed.

Do I need to skin the animal first?

No, skin on or off both work — bring it however is easiest for you. It's drop-off only at our shop in Secunda.

How much does it cost?

R45 per kilogram to process, which includes added fat if you request it. It's charged by weight, not a flat rate per animal, and pricing may change over time.

How long does it take?

About a week from drop-off to collection, depending on how much you bring in and what you've asked us to make.
